The words
Go! U Panthers! Break right through that line. With our colors flying, we will cheer you all the time. U! Rah! Rah!
Go! U Panthers! Fight for victory. Spread far the fame of our fair name. Go Panthers, win that game!
(Whistle) (Yell) Go! Panthers Go! (Whistle) (Yell) Go! Panthers Go! Hit ’em hard! Hit ’em low! Go, Panthers Go!
(Repeat the chorus.)
For reference: the band plays it instrumental. The sheet prints “Rah! Rah! Rah!” where the words sung today have “U! Rah! Rah!”, and the band hits each one. “Panthers” has a syllable fewer than the name the sheet prints, so the word before it (“U” or “Go”) holds over a note.
About the tune
Read note by note off a 1945 reprint of the sheet music by Melrose Music Corp., not a 1913 printing: the ’13 after Van Etten’s name in its heading marks his class, and he wrote the song in 1912, as a senior. What it prints is the march’s trio, Tempo di marcia. The melody, the chord symbols and the bass line are as printed there; where no chord is printed, the score shows the one read from the piano part in italics. The band arrangement around them is new.
Checked a second time at the scan’s full resolution: the bass walk in bar 24 (G♯ A F♯ D) and the piano’s chords under the shouts in bars 16 and 44. The “Hit ’em” chords are voiced as the piano prints them, F A C E♭ with E♭ on top, the brass an octave under the woodwinds.
